James Gerard Dinan (born 1959)[1] is an American investor, former hedge fund manager, and philanthropist with an estimated net worth of $2.2 billion as of 2025. He founded York Capital Management in 1991.[1] Early life and education James Gerard Dinan was born in 1959. He graduated from the private Bancroft School in Worcester, Massachusetts. He then went on to earn a B.S. in economics from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania in 1981.[3] In 1985, Dinan earned an M.B.A. from Harvard University.[4] Investment career In 1985, he took a job at the merger arbitrage firm Kellner DiLeo & Company.[5] In 1987, the market crashed and he lost his entire $600,000 in savings.[5] In 1991, he was able to raise $3.6 million from his former DLJ colleagues and started his own hedge fund named York Capital (named after the street he was then living on, York Avenue).[5] In 1993, his fund earned credibility with a 33.8 percent return and by 2000, the fund had over $610 million in assets.[5] In 2010, he sold 33% of York to Credit Suisse for $425 million.[1] In July 2014, Dinan gained partial ownership of the NBA's Milwaukee Bucks.[6] In June 2017, he named two eventual successors to lead York Capital in the future.[7] In late 2023, Dinan stepped down as chairman of York Capital Management and began managing his family office.[1] As of December 2024, York Capital Management had $1.6 billion in assets under management.[1] Philanthropy Dinan and his wife Elizabeth R. Miller conduct their philanthropy primarily through the Dinan Family Foundation, established in 1997 and based in Palm Beach, Florida. The foundation focuses on education, arts and culture, health, athletics, and New York City community initiatives, granting approximately $3.7 million from 2017 to 2018 and $5 million in 2024.[8][9] Notable donations include support for the Harvard Business School Fund in 2016.[4] In 2008, they funded the James G. Dinan and Elizabeth R. Miller Gallery at the Museum of the City of New York, contributing over $5 million.[11] In 2011, Dinan helped document New York City's history through contributions to related efforts.[12] In 2024, following a major undisclosed donation to his alma mater, the University of Pennsylvania, Vance Hall—a key building on the Wharton School campus—was renamed Dinan Hall to support its renovation for programs in business economics, public policy, real estate, and leadership. The hall was dedicated on April 3, 2025.[13][14][15] Dinan has also supported health organizations such as Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and the Hospital for Special Surgery, educational programs like Harlem Village Academies and Prep for Prep, athletics including USA Wrestling and the United States Equestrian Team, and arts institutions like Lincoln Center and Juilliard.[8] Personal life Dinan is married to Elizabeth R. Miller,[16][17] and they have three children together, including racing driver Michael Dinan.[1] Dinan resides in North Salem, Westchester County, New York, and owns homes in Manhattan; Nantucket, Massachusetts; West Palm Beach, Florida and on the Caribbean island of Saint Barthélemy
