Bill Austin is an American businessman and philanthropist known for founding and leading Starkey Hearing Technologies, the largest American-owned global hearing aid manufacturer, and for establishing the Starkey Hearing Foundation to provide free hearing aids to people in need worldwide.[1][2]Born in February 1942 in Nixa, Missouri, to a modest family, Austin initially pursued pre-medical studies at the University of Minnesota with aspirations of becoming a missionary doctor. While working to support his education, he began making ear molds in 1961 and soon recognized the profound impact of helping people with hearing loss, prompting him to leave medical studies and dedicate his career to the hearing aid industry.[2]He started by repairing hearing aids from various manufacturers—eventually servicing more than anyone else globally—and pioneered the development and licensing of in-the-ear hearing aids. In 1970, Austin acquired Starkey Laboratories, a small ear mold company, for $13,000 and expanded it into a leading innovator in hearing technology, emphasizing customer satisfaction through initiatives like 90-day guarantees and fixed-rate repairs.[1][2]Austin founded the Starkey Hearing Foundation in 1973 to assist Americans with hearing loss, later expanding its mission internationally after a personal turning point in 1997. Together with his wife Tani, he has traveled extensively on humanitarian missions, personally fitting hearing aids for individuals in more than 100 countries, including notable figures such as five U.S. presidents, two popes, Mother Teresa, and Nelson Mandela.[1]His work has earned widespread recognition, including the Horatio Alger Award, the Albert Schweitzer Leadership Award, the National Caring Award, and appointment as the first Goodwill Global Ambassador for Ear and Hearing Health by the United Nations in 2017.[3][1]
Early Life
Birth and background
William F. "Bill" Austin was born in February 1942 in Nixa, Missouri, to J. E. "Dutch" and Zola Austin. His father worked as a lumber trader for Georgia-Pacific, and his mother worked in a factory. Growing up in a modest family, Austin helped support them by collecting bottles for recycling, picking blackberries in the summertime, harvesting foxgloves and chittum bark for medicinal purposes, and later holding a paper route and various part-time jobs.[2]
Education and early career
Austin idolized Albert Schweitzer as a boyhood role model and aspired to become a missionary doctor. He began pre-medical studies at the University of Minnesota. To help pay for his education, in 1961 he started making ear molds for a hearing aid dealer in Minneapolis.[2]At the time, hearing aids were viewed as clumsy devices, and the medical community largely overlooked the field. Austin saw the potential to help more people through business than through individual medical practice. He discontinued his medical studies and opened a hearing aid shop, dedicating his career to the hearing aid industry.[2][1]

[4] In his final year, he appeared in 12 games and started 8, concluding a seven-season tenure in which he played in 76 total games (60 starts) exclusively with the Giants. [4] He stepped away from playing at age 29, with no further NFL games recorded after that season. [4]Austin did not play for the Green Bay Packers during his career.
