H.Essers is a Belgian international logistics service provider. The company is based in Transportlaan in the Limburg city of Genk. History H.Essers owes its name to its founder, Henri Essers, who started transporting livestock in 1928. In the 1950s Henri’s sons Noël and Jules joined the management of the company.[1] In 2007 the family business won the “Enterprise of the Year” award.[2] In March 2013, Gert Bervoets became CEO of H.Essers, succeeding Ivo Marechal. At the same time, Hilde Essers, daughter of Noël, became co-managing director.[3] In 2017, Hilde Essers succeeded her father as chair of the board of directors. The company made several acquisitions, including Hessenatie Logistics in February 2011,[4] Centrum Transport Valkenswaard in 2004, KDL Trans from Vilvoorde in August 2012,[5] Neff & Steelexpress from Schoten in May 2014,[6] the German pharma logistics provider Kammann in August 2015,[7] the transport company Verstaete from Moorslede in April 2016,[8] the Argentine transport company Tradelog in July 2016,[9] Hospital Logistics from Leuven in July 2016,[10] chemicals specialist Huktra from Bruges in February 2018,[11] the Dutch company Gebroeders Hoefnagels Transport from Weert and Asten in 2019,[12] the French liquid bulk specialist Tank Management in September 2020,[13] the Dutch Meeus Groep, specialized in chemical logistics, in December 2020,[14] the Spanish chemical logistics service provider Coral Transport & Logistics in October 2021,[15] and the Dutch company Verheul Transport in February 2022.[16] In December 2020 it was announced that H.Essers, which is specialized among other things in pharmaceutical transport, had been authorized to transport Comirnaty, the COVID-19 vaccine from Pfizer-BioNTech, throughout Europe.[17] Figures In 2021 H.Essers recorded a turnover of 925 million euros. The company has 1,355,000 m² of warehouse space, a fleet of 1,440 tractor units and 3,816 trailers, and more than 6,960 employees spread across 85 sites in 19 countries in Western and Eastern Europe.[18] Since the closure of Ford Genk, H.Essers has been the largest private employer in the province of Limburg.[11] Essersbos The company is also known for its expansion plans, which are supported by the city of Genk, the province of Limburg and the Flemish government. As a result of this expansion, 12 hectares of protected forest would disappear. In January 2016 several nature organizations and action groups, including Natuurpunt and Bond Beter Leefmilieu, appealed to the Council of State to challenge the decision of the Flemish Government regarding the felling of a number of trees around the company.[19] In February 2017 they contested the planning permission for the expansion before the Council for Permit Disputes.[20] In July 2017 the Council of State suspended the Regional Spatial Implementation Plan for the expansion.[21] In order to still be able to build new pharmaceutical storage facilities in Genk, the company announced in 2019 that it wanted to expand on the Hörmann site to the northeast of its location on Transportlaan, which would result in the loss of 8 hectares of forest. As compensation, the transport company would plant 12 hectares of forest in Oudsbergen.[22] In December 2019 the nature organization BOS+ lodged an appeal against these deforestation plans.[23] In June 2020 the Council for Permit Disputes suspended the environmental permit for the expansion works.[24] In February 2021 it became known that H.Essers had reached an agreement with BOS+, under which BOS+ would drop its opposition to the forest clearance in exchange for the planting of 17.1 hectares of forest elsewhere (5 hectares more than required), the promise not to further exploit the remaining Ferrarisbos, and measures to improve biodiversity on the company’s own sites.[25] Trivia On the Genk-Noord industrial estate, where H.Essers is also located, a street has been named after Henri Essers: the Henri Esserslaan.
